Lions Clubs & Blaze Aid Camp Lexton Jan – April 2020

The Lexton-Ben Major Fire of December 2019 burned approximately 3,000 hectares of farm and bushland. Initial estimates suggest that more than 1000 sheep were lost and more than 150kms of fencing has been damaged or destroyed.

The Lions Clubs of Alfredton Lucas, Ballarat, Brown Hill, Buninyong Mt Helen, Creswick, Haddon, Mount Bolton, Miners Rest, Sebastopol, Wendouree, Maryborough, Carisbrook, Maldon, Castlemaine and Harcourt (Zones 5 & 6) have banded together to support the Blaze Aid recovery plan.

Blaze Aid has developed and implemented a recovery plan that aims to assist the community to replace or restore damage fencing. They have established a Camp at the Lexton Recreational Reserve and are coordinating a group of volunteers that have offered to assist. They will be operating the Camp from now until the end of April 2020. For more information on how to volunteer to assist Blaze Aid, please visit their website at https://blazeaid.com.au/lexton-2019/ and email your contact details to them.

The best form of communication with Blaze Aid at this time is email, due to the extensive damage to the local telecommunication assets and the extremely limited mobile phone reception in the area.

Several of the above mentioned Lions Clubs have offered to assist Blaze Aid by providing logistical and catering support. They will be assisting with preparing the evening meals for the volunteers each day from the 25th January until April 2020. For more information on volunteering to assist the Lions Clubs with providing catering support (cooking, cleaning or the provision of fresh produce etc for meals), please contact the Zone 5 Chairperson, Des Jones on M: 0407 927 867 or E: desjones53@bigpond.com

To make monetary donations to support Blaze Aid, please visit their website at https://blazeaid.com.au/donations/how-donate/

The Lions Club Zone Chairpersons will coordinate with the key stakeholders in this recovery plan, to provide regular updates on our progress. These updates will be published on the District website and in local newspapers, throughout the recovery process.

Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Lions Club via Des jones on the above mentioned details or the Zone 6 Chairperson Grant Victor-Gordon on M: 0410 261 338 E: gvg1966@bigpond.com
